One can point to compelling, truthful moments in each, especially Magnolia, but none of these works was a success, and There Will Be Blood in particular, Anderson’s single greatest artistic and intellectual opportunity to date, ended up a disaster, cheaply substituting demagogy and scenery-chewing for coherent behavior.
